pain + hurt + disbelief + death = iraq

When I'm feeling overwhelmed by the sadness that is Iraq I pick up Tony Jundt's History of Europe. Europe was rebuilt. I know. I've seen it. Iraq? The physical reconstuction will come. How do you spiritually rebuild a shattered country?

I'm trying to get to Cambodia at some point. The book Warrior Politics had some influence on my coming here and part of the focus was the Khemer Rouge. I think a visit might help me make sense of man's periodic absence of consciousness. What is frightening is that this could be you and I. We are no different. History and environment shape us.
